Best Portable Table Saws For Woodworking

If you’ve ever lugged a table saw around a job site, tried to adjust the fence on a saw built for portability, or had an accident with a table saw you’ll know choosing the best portable table saws can have trade-offs.

Did you know there are over 30,000 table saw injuries every year – and 10% involve an amputation?  That makes features you would  find only on the large cabinet saws, such as the SawStop system (Amazon) a key consideration as you look at your next portable table saw.

Or if you are looking for the ultimate in portability there are now cordless powerhouses that can rip dozens of sheets of plywood on a single charge.

Bottom line: for all saws you should consider the base, size of blade, surface area of the table top, wheels, rip width to right (and left) of the blade, and safety features.  And of course corded vs. cordless.   But put safety first as you make this buying decision.

1. SawStop JSS-MCA - The Safest Portable Table Saw

SAWSTOP 10-Inch Jobsite Saw Pro with Mobile Cart…
  • SAWSTOP PATENTED SAFETY SYSTEM: Stops a spinning blade on contact with skin. The blade stops in less than 5 milliseconds, and drops below the table, minimizing a potentially life-altering injury to a mere scratch.

SawStop has been making top-end table saws for years.  What’s different with them that puts them at #1 on the list of best portable table saws?  Safety.  As in technology that might prevent an amputated finger.  SawStop table saws have a blade that carries a small electric current.  This current is monitored and any change, such as your electrically conductive body touching it, will cause an instant safety mechanism to engage.  Whoa!  What’s that?

Once your body touches the blade the safety system kicks in and instantly slams the blade to a stop with an aluminum brake system that stops the blade within 5 milliseconds.  Cool, huh?  Well there’s one more feature.  Once the blade is stopped it is almost instantly pulled below the surface of the table and the power cut to the saw.

Now – how much do you think an emergency bill is for a cut finger (or cut off finger)?  These saws are not cheap.  You are paying for a technology that has some serious ability to save your digits.

Wait.  Before you keep scrolling.  There are over 30,000 table saw injuries a year and up to 10% of those involve amputations.  Maybe that extra $500 for a table saw with a finger saving capability is worth it.  If you are a weekend warrior and have a desk job just think of the fun you could have re-learning to type.

A cordless table saw.  Of course it’s portable, but would this thing really work?

This cordless table saw can cut 600 linear feet on a single battery.  You are doing the math.  600 divided by 8 is 75.  75 sheets of plywood or soft lumber on a battery.

What’s the catch?  The base saw is a few bucks more than it’s corded cousin.  The batteries, if you are invested in the Milwaukee M18 FUEL system, could be plug-and-play (read: free).  If you are buying new the battery is a few hundred bucks.

Added bonus – Milwaukee has an anti-theft tool tracking system called ONE-KEY that let’s you track your tools when in range of the Milwaukee app.  Including disabling them.

5. Dewalt Cordless Table Saw

DEWALT FLEXVOLT 60V MAX* Table Saw, 8-1/4-Inch,…
  • Flexible – power of corded. Freedom of cordless. The world’s first battery that automatically changes voltage when you change tools
  • 24″ of Rip capacity for ripping 4×8 plywood or osb sheets
  • Rack and pinion telescoping fence rails make fence adjustments smooth and accurate

There are two cordless table saws available today.  A European model was briefly available and disappeared.

The Dewalt is very similar to the Milwaukee and the #1 criteria may just be what battery system you own – or want to own.  We’ll save that head-to-head comparison for some other time.  At the moment you can’t go wrong with either.

Both also have 8-1/4″ blades that do a great job up to 2-1/2″.

Dewalt seems to do a slightly better in offering attachments and bases if that’s a selection criteria.
