6. Local Wood (VA)
In at least one metro of every state you will find a business that converts urban trees into wood. While that may not seem special, most urban trees are sent to the landfill or made into mulch.
And as you can guess part of the cost is the many nails and screws an urban tree collects. But Local Wood is where to look for urban sourced hardwood and live edge slabs.

Resources
When you look for hardwood lumber in a state you want options:
- One-stop shops that have every single species you can think of
- Urban lumber stores that offer up locally sourced wood with live edge slabs
- Mills with onsite kilns for direct access to locally sourced lumber.
So how does Virginia rate? Compared to neighboring states there is a great supply across all there categories. Which will make finding your hardwood lumber in Virginia easy.
Featured Virginia Wood
Virginia is one of only two states that features the same tree and flower as it’s state symbol: the Flowering Dogwood.
While the state tree isn’t a species to make hardwood from (usually), you can instead look at a locally sourced Black Walnut. This tree is coveted from the West Coast in Oregon to the far East Coast in Maine for it’s beautiful grain and mixed color sap wood.
