While the Pinyon Pine is the state tree of New Mexico, there are a variety of hardwoods in New Mexico’s approximately 24 million acres of forestry. From the United Sates Department of Agriculture:
- Pinyon and juniper woodlands are over half of the total forestry in total acreage, followed by Mesquite woodlands
- Gambel oak is the most abundant by number of trees
- While Ponderosa pine is the largest and makes up the biggest share of biomass
- Commercial harvest was 28.8 million board feet in 2012
